Cornus canadensis
Bunchberry is a low-trailing forest herb which grows from 5-25cm (2-10in) tall. This perennial often forms a beautiful covering on the forest floor - making it an excellent garden ornamental. Whorls of 4 or 5 leaves that surround a central cluster of greenish-white to purplish flowers. The bright-red fleshy berries make a spectacular display in the summer.
Bunchberry is common in moist coniferous and mixed forest meadows and bogs, often growing on tree trunks, logs, and stumps. It is a moderately shade-tolerant species, and grows well on nutrient-poor sites.
